It occurred to my daughter the other day that our dogs, who are now 9 and 3, have never had a birthday party. So she decided to throw them one - complete with "pupcakes", party guests, and puppy presents.

I think they liked it.

{Great doggie gift: an old pair of socks - ball up one sock and stuff it into the other, then put a knot in the outside sock to keep it in. Piper loves hers and carries it around everywhere}.

Lady, with her border collie smarts, seemed to know that this party was for her. And she certainly kept a close eye on those cupcakes.

Happy very belated birthday, sweet doggies. And great job, BeachPea, on pulling off a perfectly posh and pleasant puppy party.

My dad has some conferences this month and was afraid he'd be too busy for doggie daddy duty, so Grumpy's Hector is staying with us at the farm for a few weeks.

He didn't like the idea of Grumpy driving off with out him too much at first...

but somehow...

I think he'll get by. :)

Last time on the Continuing Adventures of Grumpy's Hector, we left Hector contemplating his purpose in life, his true calling

when suddenly, on our journey home from the woods, it all became clear

when he saw this....

a need to be filled.

A COW TO BE HERDED.

and lucky for Hector, Lady had decided to take the day off from her position as the farm's top cow herd

(in her mind, anyway)

so Hector gave it a go

with all he had in him.

The cows were a little perplexed with this new turn of events.

But Hector was one happy doggy, who had found his true calling.

You messin' with me, little doggy?

I didn't THINK so.

That's okay, Hector.

We still love you.

And think you are an awesome cow dog.

We've been spending a lot of time outside enjoying the gorgeous and mild Fall weather lately, so lucky for us, we have a courageous cow-herding farm dog to protect us from any bovine threats...

in her mind, anyway.

Lady is very proud of her Border Collie heritage, and fine herding skills.

Piper, however, is a chicken.

And when we leave in our golf cart to explore on the farm, Piper will sit on the porch for a long time watching us go and debating whether or not she should follow us.

Because that's a long way to run for a dog with little legs,
especially when there are lots of really big cows in the way.

But eventually loyalty to her family wins out and she will find her way down to where we finally park ourselves.

Because all dogs love human attention,
but Piper, especially seems to live and breathe for it.

Some things are worth braving the cows for. :)

Lady endured her clothes-wearing shame to hang around under tables in case any of those ribs were accidentally dropped

Hector? He had no shame.

And proudly donned his party duds for the chance to get as close as possible to the vittles.

The Continuing Adventures of Grumpy's Hector - part 3

Previously on the Continuing Adventures of Grumpy's Hector, we learned that the stray dog who found my dad, Grumpy - who is not in the market for a dog, has not only been named, but has been taken to the vet for shots and a check-up.

On this episode, watch as Hector-the-Lost gets his very own collar.

While it has been over a week since Hector showed up in Grumpy's carport, we are still keeping the option open that Hector's real owners may show up, and Grumpy is still debating whether he really wants a dog as his new BFF. (I think the picture above answers the second question).

But while we wait, we thought it couldn't hurt to introduce Hector to the rest of the farm...

Obviously the kids are taken with him...

the rabbits and chickens, maybe not so much.

But that's okay, because they were small potatoes, once Hector discovered these...

Despite his vicious bravery, the horses paid little attention to Hector.

Oliver the Cat, however, was very interested in this new playtoy,
and followed Hector all over the farm, practicing his pouncing lessons.

"Hey, Dad, can I eat this thing?" Hector wanted to know.

"No? Well then I'm heading back to those horses! Byeeee!"

Grumpy leaves for his Florida home tomorrow.

Will Hector be going with him?

Will Grumpy officially step into the wonders of dog ownership?

The Continuing Adventures of Grumpy's Hector - Part 2

Last Time on the Continuing Adventures of Grumpy's Hector, we learned that a little lost dog befriended my dad, Grumpy. Fans wanted to know, would Hector stay...

Hector-the-Lost still has not been claimed.
And even though Grumpy is not in the market for a dog, here he is taking Hector to the vet for a check-up.

,
We found out Hector is just a puppy.
But he'll likely remain small, as the vet thinks he's probably a cross between a toy Manchester Terrier and a Chihuahua.

And though Grumpy is not in the market for a dog, he later spent a lot of time researching the Manchester Terrier and telling us all about it's features (he chose to ignore the Chihuahua influence).

Here poor Hector gets his shots. Grumpy had stated that he was not going to spend money on this dog that he is just holding on to until the owners find him or until he can find him another home. But he did.

Things might be looking good for Grumpy's Hector...

The Continuing Adventures of Grumpy's Hector

My dad lives part time at the house across the road from us here on the farm (the other part time he is still living down in Florida until he retires). So guess what showed up in his carport the other morning...

A stray puppy.

And, no, to those family members who think I secretly placed this adorable little bundle of cuteness strategically in his carport because I thought my dad needed a dog, I did not.

In fact, my dad (who my kids call "Grumpy" (short for grandpa)) was not in the market for a dog at all.

He has not had a dog since the Irish Setter we had when I was a little, little kid.
Because Grumpy travels a lot and likes to be independent.
His own man.

But then this guy came along.

The kids think he is the cutest creature they have ever seen.

And Grumpy, as it turns out, may be just the tiniest bit smitten with him, too.

And vice-versa. The little dog follows Grumpy everywhere. Is upset when he's not right by his side. So now, when Grumpy walks across the road with his martini to our house for dinner, he also has something in his other hand.

Now Grumpy says he doesn't need a dog. And he's only keeping him until the real owners come or until he can find him another home.

But he did name him.

So the question is,
will Grumpy-the-Independent keep Hector-the-Lost?

Will the real owners come and take Hector away?

Will our dog, Piper, who loves Grumpy more than she loves me, allow the newcomer to share her Grumpy-space?

This is Curly. He was rescued from a high kill shelter in rural North GA. He is probably around 5 or 6 years old. He is great with kids, ignores the cats, and gets along well with other dogs. He is great in the car and is completely housetrained. He has been fostered in a home with dogs, cats, and kids for over 3 months. He knows "sit", "stay" and "come". He does not chew or get up on the furniture. His teeth have had some wear and tear, but he has had a complete dental workup. They should be fine. He LOVES to be in the water. He would make a great lake, river, and beach companion. He would make a great family dog.

Jack is a gorgeous blue merle australian shepherd mix. He is mostly aussie and if he is mixed with anything at all I would say its border collie. He is approximately 1.5 years old and weighs about 37lbs. He has the typical aussie personality traits and would do well with someone experienced in this breed/mix. He is eager to please his person and wants to be right by your side. It would be best if he went to a home with a fenced yard and someone who can properly excerise him. Summer is ending and that means one thing: Back to School. For most people right now, images of school supplies, homework and a new fall wardrobe are dancing in parent’s heads. But there’s one thing people often forget about: the family pet.

It’s not abnormal for dogs and cats to get depressed when kids leave the house to head back to school – or go off to college.

Paul Mann, the Founder of Fetch! Pet Care gives the following tips to take right now to help avoid the Back-to-School funk for pets.

Lots of exercise is a key. If you can exercise pets in the morning before you head to work, they’ll be so tired that there will be less time to think about the empty house they’re sitting in.

Don't make a big deal about your leaving. If you smother the dog or cat in kisses, they’ll be able to tell that something’s up and will get anxious while you’re away.

Consider hiring a professional pet sitter for a mid-day dog walk or cat visit to break up the day. Even a half-hour walk or visit will give your pet the one-on-one personal attention they deserve, not to mention tire them out.

Give your pet an old T-Shirt while you’re gone so that he can cuddle up with it and have a familiar smell.

Get into a routine where you let the kids walk the dog after they get home from school – and before they start on homework. That way, the dog will look forward to the kids getting home from school.

If one of the kids usually feeds and plays with the cats, try switching up the routine so that the cat gets used to other people in the house. Also consider having the cat sleep with a different family member so they’re less attached to the kids.

FOSTER A DOG!

Many rescue organizations have people "foster" dogs and puppies in their homes until they can be adopted. This helps scared and homeless animals learn that people can be good, and important socialization skills that will help them prepare for their "forever home" when they are adopted. It also keeps them out of shelters, where they can catch contagious diseases, or be put down.

Check to see if a rescue organization in your area needs doggie foster parents. If you decide to foster a dog or puppy, you can post his or her picture on our website to help him or her find a forever home. Click on the "submit your beachdog" tab above to submit your pic.

Other Ways to Help:

Spay or neuter you dog.

Give the countless animals already in shelters a chance by not making more puppies, and improve your dog's health and chances of avoiding reproductive system cancers.

Volunteer at an adoption booth.

Contact your local rescue organization or animal shelter to see if they need help running their adoption booths, or in their shelters.

Donate money or needed items.

Many animal shelters or rescue organizations need supplies like old newspapers, towels, leashes, cages, and dog food. And many need donations of money to help cover shelter costs or medicines and necessary surgeries to help save animal lives. Contact your local shelter or rescue organization to find out their needs.
